Dusty has been learning his commands since the first day he got here. Before he came to us he already knew to sit, and stay down when he's asked to. On the street he knows to sit and wait when we wait for the light to change. Coming in and out, he knows to sit by the door when we are getting ready to go out or opening the door to come home. Recently he has learned to "give me five" (shake hands - see the rollover picture below on the left) and also to hold on to an object (his toy) for a couple of seconds. We are also teaching him "rollover" and to pick up an object. He is a fast learner and very motivated by food.

By training Dusty I learn a lot about him and myself. It's a great way to practice your "patience" and to learn to observe, to motivate and to communicate. There are many great resources about dog training that have helped me in the process. Training your dog is more rewarding than anything you can do for him - you learn about each other, establish a channel of communication and most importantly the bond that will last for the life of his with you.
